Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 8 May 1991

Vol. 128 No. 14

Employment Equality Act, 1977 (Employment of Females on Underground Work in Mines) Order, 1989: Motion.

I move:

That Seanad Éireann approves the following Order in draft:

Employment Equality Act, 1977 (Employment of Females on Underground Work in Mines) Order, 1989,

a copy of which Order in draft was laid before Seanad Éireann on 5th June, 1990.

This removal of discriminatory provisions from worker protection legislation where there is no longer justification for their inclusion is in accordance with the provisions of the EC equal treatment directive. The draft order before the House today will allow women in all occupations, including manual occupations, to work below ground in a mine. As required by the Act, I consulted the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the Federation of Irish Employers about this proposal. I have also consulted the Employment Equality Agency and the Council for the Status of Women. All organisations consulted agreed with the proposals. The draft order requires the prior approval of each House of the Oireachtas by way of affirmative resolution and I strongly urge Seanad Éireann to express such approval.

It is a bit ironic that we should get this in a stamp which is very clearly marked parliamentary draftsman. I suggest to the Minister that we might change it to parliamentary draftsperson. I am happy to support the motion.

Question put and agreed to.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach
