Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 7 Jul 1992

Vol. 133 No. 14

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Ó Cuív that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Agriculture and Food to ensure full payment of ewe premium to all farmers in Connemara who presented fewer ewes for inspection than they applied for, for the 1991 season, where the shortfall was no fault of their own.

I also received notice from Senator Neville of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to extend the retirement option for members of an Garda Síochána up to and including the rank of inspector to 60 years of age for those members due to retire after 31 December 1992.

I also received notice from Senator Murphy of the following matter:

The failure of the Minister for Education to appoint Government nominees to the governing body of UCC.

I also received notice from Senator Raftery of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to take more effective steps to prevent the pollution of our fresh waters and to restock the rivers and lakes, which have been destocked by pollution.

I also received notice from Senator Norris of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to intervene to secure the rights of a person (details supplied) deprived of an award on an appeal in the Supreme Court, which involved a possible miscarriage of justice and subjected him to the further imposition of punitive retrospective costs, with disastrous results for himself and his family.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Ó Cuív, Neville and Murphy as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senators Ó Cuív's and Neville's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senator Murphy may give notice on another day of the matter he wishes to raise.

I regret I have had to rule the matters raised by Senators Raftery and Norris as not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility.
