Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 17 Dec 1992

Vol. 134 No. 11

Private Business. - Financial Transfers Bill, 1992: Motion for Earlier Signature.

I move:

That, pursuant to subsection 2 of section 2, of Article 25 of the Constitution, Seanad Éireann concurs with the Government in a request to the President to sign the Financial Transfers Bill, 1992, on a date which is earlier than the fifth day after the date on which the Bill shall have been presented to her.

Question put and agreed to.

When is it proposed to sit again?

Before I answer you, a Chathaoirligh, I would like to say that the last three-and-a-half years in the Seanad was a very fulfilling time for me. I would like to be associated with the tributes paid to Senators John A. Murphy, Jack Harte, Carmencita Hederman and Myles Staunton. I would like to pay tribute to the Members who were elected to the Lower House. I would like to pay tribute to you, a Chathaoirligh, to Senator Eoin Ryan who is now Deputy Ryan, who was our Chief Whip and to Senator G.V. Wright who were all great people to work with. Deputy Ryan was a very fine colleague to work with. I would like to thank Senator Maurice Manning and Senator Liam Cosgrave and the Whips of the other parties. At times when we had problems with the Order of Business they were always most helpful. I wish to thank the staff of the Seanad, including the Clerk, the ushers and all those involved in the day-to-day running of the Seanad. I also thank the members of my own party and those of the other parties for their co-operation.

I cannot put into words the way I feel about the Minister for Finance and the Minister of State at that Department. There is no doubt that at times it was awkward for them to come into the Seanad but they were always willing to do so, always listened and accepted the recommendations we put forward to Bills and included them, if at all possible.

I wish everyone on the Seanad trail every success and hope they will be back. I suppose there will be changes, that would be regrettable. I wish each and every one of you a happy and holy Christmas. I now propose that the House adjourn sine die.

That is the longest proposal for an adjournment that I have ever heard, but I wish to pay tribute to Senator Fitzgerald, the Assistant Whip who has worked with both myself and Senator Wright. I have always found him to be an outstanding and committed Whip and very interested in his work. He has done a great job. I commend and congratulate him.
