Vol. 146 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

I welcome everyone back. I hope we all have a happy new year.

I have notice from Senator McGowan that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to discuss the lack of additional funding provided for the southern Border counties.

I have also received notice from Senator O'Toole on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht to facilitate the proposal for the establishment of a marina and mooring facilities at Albert Lock, County Roscommon.

Someone has to look after Roscommon.

I have also received notice from Senator Neville on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to ensure that the proposed extension to replace the prefabricated classrooms at Pallaskenry national school, County Limerick, is constructed in 1996.

I have also received notice from Senator Fahey on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to outline the regime in our prisons for prisoners convicted of serious crime, including details of confinement, leisure facilities and other amenities and if she will consider the imposition of more Draconian measures for habitual criminals.

I have also received notice from Senator Finneran on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to sanction and provide funding for a public sewerage scheme in the villages of Ballintubber and Cloonfad, County Roscommon.

I have also received notice from Senator Cotter on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to examine the possibility of increasing the grant aided financial assistance made available to postgraduate students involved in research programmes in the various higher education colleges and universities.

I have also received notice from Senator Cosgrave on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to ensure that Dún Laoighaire-Rathdown County Council retains its vocational education committee committee in light of the new boundaries.

I have also received notice from Senator Daly on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to provide funding this year for the second phase building programme at Kilrush community school; and when such work will commence.

I regard the matters raised as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator McGowan's and Senator O'Toole's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
