Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 4 Dec 1996

Vol. 149 No. 11

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator McGowan that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Tourism and Trade to support the Bill before the United States Congress which will allow goods and products manufactured in Northern Ireland and certain counties in the Republic of Ireland free entry into the United States for a ten year period.

I have also received notice from Senator Maloney of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to review the level of remuneration payable to physiotherapists in view of the fact that 17 years have elapsed since the last review.

I have also received notice from Senator Finneran of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to make a statement on the prevalence of MRSA in Irish hospitals.

I have also received notice from Senator Henry of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to endorse the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the prosecution of rape as a war crime.

I have also received notice from Senator McGennis of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to make a statement regarding the Government's position on water charges given his recent letter to Fingal County Council indicating that this issue would be addressed before the end of this year.

Two chances.

I have also received notice from Senator Kelly of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to transfer the responsibility of lighting national roads, primary and secondary, to the National Roads Authority.

I have also received notice from Senator Daly of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to make a decision regarding the provision of a formal personal assistant service to enable people with disabilities to live independently; and if he will establish an independent living fund.

I have also received notice from Senator McDonagh of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to make a budget allocation in the 1997 Estimates for the urgently needed six room extension to Gort community school, County Galway.

I have also received notice from Senator Mulcahy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to urgently consider the need to review and abolish residential property tax, given that this tax unduly discriminates against people living in Dublin and places a very heavy burden upon people who are already paying income tax.

I regard the matters raised by Senators McGowan, Maloney, Finneran, Henry, McGennis, Kelly, Daly and McDonagh as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator McGowan's and Senator Maloney's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. I regret that I had to rule out of order the matter raised by Senator Mulcahy as it involves advocacy of legislation. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

Looks like a day for Donegal.
