Vol. 163 No. 2

Electronic Commerce Bill, 2000: Report and Final Stages.

Government amendment No. 1:
In page 19, between lines 17 and 18, to insert the following:
"25.–The provisions ofsection 24 extend to activities that took place partly outside the State.”.

This amendment is in the spirit of the amendment tabled by Senator Costello and his colleagues in regard to section 24. We have received legal advice and this amendment is a response to Senator Costello's amendment.

I am very happy that the amendment meets my objectives.

Amendment agreed to.
Bill reported with amendment and received for final consideration.
Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach and Members for the attention they gave to this Bill on Second Stage and again today. I was reading over the Second Stage debate which was so lively and interesting. Today's trimmings and additions, so to speak, are necessary on Committee and Report Stages. I thank Senators for their attendance and my officials for the work they put into the Bill.

I thank the Minister for her courtesy during what has been a fruitful and posi tive debate. Her Department has been running effectively recently and no doubt it will continue that way.

No doubt there will be many a scrap.

I thank the Minister for the manner in which she handled this important Bill. The debate has taken place in the right spirit on all Stages. Amendments have been aimed at improving the Bill and facilitating its passage through the House as quickly as possible. I hope the Minister will have the same success in getting the legislation through the Lower House.

We will see how smart they are. They may not be as smart as Members here.

They will have to get up early.

Unfortunately, approximately 12 Bills that have gone through this House have been left lying on the shelf in the Lower House. We are naturally glad, therefore, to see a Bill being expedited through the other House.

I wish the Minister the best with the Bill and thank her again for her courtesy and that of her staff in the way they handled this legislation.

I thank the Minister for initiating the Bill in this House. We like to be recognised. It was a pleasure to see the way amendments were discussed by the Opposition and accepted by the Minister.

Question put and agreed to.
Sitting suspended at 12.23 p.m. and resumed at 12.30 p.m.
