Vol. 170 No. 13

Business of Seanad.

I have received notice from Senator Brian Hayes that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance, in the context of the upcoming budget and the deteriorating state of the national finances, to consider changing the existing rules that apply to the Government's special savings scheme which would allow account holders to have the option of leaving the scheme without the imposition of a 23% tax penalty.

I have also received notice from Senator Ulick Burke of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to clarify his position and his Department's policy in relation to the recent announcement by two fee paying schools in Dublin that they are now operating mandatory drug testing of students in their schools.

I have also received notice from Senator Leyden of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government to outline the number of licences which have issued for the production of genetically modified, GM, crops and the monitoring system in place.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Hayes and Burke as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. I regret that I have had to rule out of order the matter raised by Senator Leyden as the Minister has no official responsibility in the matter.
