Vol. 186 No. 17

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator John Paul Phelan that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health and Children to comment on reports that the child health screening programme, last revised in 2004, is being undertaken in a haphazard fashion, resulting in many children, especially those in rural areas, failing to receive hearing, oral, dental and vision checks as considered appropriate under the programme, and the need for the Minister to provide statistics of the coverage achieved by the programme since 2000.

I have also received notice from Senator Finucane of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to give an update on the position on an extension to Ballylanders national school in County Limerick.

I have also received notice from Senator McHugh of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to give an update on the 1999 task force report for County Donegal and the July 2006 interdepartmental report on jobs.

I have also received notice from Senator Coghlan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage, and Local Government to encourage and support the joint efforts of the trustees of Muckross House and the National Parks and Wildlife Service in carrying out a comprehensive botanical survey of Innisfallen Island with a view to obtaining the fullest information on the ancient monastic settlement and the lives of the monks, especially in regard to their cultivation of the island gardens thereon and detailing the plants, shrubs and herbs with medicinal properties.

I have also received notice from Senator Browne of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health and Children to outline the reason there is currently a 12 to 18-month waiting list for children to see a speech and language therapist in the Carlow area; the number on the waiting list for County Carlow; if there are private speech language therapists in the Carlow area; and if a similar situation of children waiting to see an occupational therapist also exists in County Carlow.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators John Paul Phelan, Finucane and McHugh and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Coghlan and Browne may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

The monks will have to wait.

One more day.
