Vol. 274 No. 1

Standing Orders: Motion

I move:

That the report of the Committee on Parliamentary Privileges and Oversight on the amendment of Standing Order 45 and temporary Standing Order 60A, and the substitution of "Chairperson" for references to "Chairman" be adopted, laid before the House and printed.

Question put and agreed to.

The motion relates to an amendment to the Standing Orders of the Seanad in the context of the use of the word "Chairman". There are 89 references to "Chairman" in our rule book and, 102 years on from the first sitting of the First Dáil, I think it is inappropriate that the Seanad would still use the word "Chairman". As a result of the motion that has been unanimously agreed by the Seanad, we will now use the word "Chairperson". I thank Members for their support on that initiative.

Sitting suspended at 4.25 p.m. and resumed at 4.40 p.m.
