Minute's Silence for Victims of the Holocaust

Today, 27 January 2022, the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which takes place to encourage the remembrance of victims of genocide across the world. Holocaust Memorial Day is an international day to remember more than 6 million Jewish people - men, women and children - who were killed during the Holocaust, as well as millions of other people who were persecuted by Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

The Holocaust profoundly affected countries in which Nazi crimes were perpetrated, with universal implications and consequences in many other parts of the world. In memory of the victims of the Holocaust, to demonstrate that we have not forgotten them, I ask Members to rise and, in solidarity with many of the national parliaments across the world, to share a minute's silence to mark the day and keep alive the memory of all those who suffered as a result of the Holocaust.

Members rose.

Sitting suspended at 12.41 p.m. and resumed at 1 p.m.
