Gnó an tSeanaid - Business of Seanad

Good morning, colleagues, and welcome to the debate on Commencement matters. I begin by welcoming the pupils and their teacher in the Visitors Gallery. It is wonderful to have you here observing the Seanad. We hope you will find some of it a bit interesting. We do not expect you to enjoy it all. You are all very welcome.

I have received notice from Senator Eugene Murphy that, on the motion for the Commencement of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to make a statement on the dental services available to medical card holders.

I have also received notice from Senator Shane Cassells of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to make a statement on plans to reconfigure services at Navan hospital's emergency department.

I have also received notice from Senator Emer Currie of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport to provide an update on a Dublin canal loop greenway.

I have also received notice from Senator Fiona O'Loughlin of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to provide an update on measures to address the school shortage issues in the Kildare and Newbridge areas for school year 2022 to 2023.

I have also received notice from Senator John McGahon of the following matter:

I have also received notice from Senator Sharon Keogan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications to make a statement on the Government's re-examination of the role of Shannon liquefied natural gas, LNG, plant in advancing energy security in Ireland, in particular by incorporating the production of green hydrogen.

I have also received notice from Senator Mary Fitzpatrick of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport to consider extending the ten-year taxi vehicle renewal rule until 2024 to prevent a further reduction in the fleet.

I have also received notice from Senator Malcolm Byrne of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to make a statement on her Department’s role in determining criteria for health insurance for international students.

I have also received notice from Senator Paul Gavan of the following matter:

The need for the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to make a statement on the European Commission's call on Ireland to comply with EU rules under the directive on European works councils.

I have also received notice from Senator Maria Byrne of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Social Protection to make a statement on the current youth unemployment rate and steps being taken to help young people into the workforce.

I have also received notice from Senator Victor Boyhan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister of State with responsibility for planning and local government to make a statement on increasing the participation of women and diversity in local government, including the funding to facilitate this participation.

I have also received notice from Senator Robbie Gallagher of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to make a statement on plans to add spinal muscular atrophy to the heel prick test.

I have also received notice from Senator Martin Conway of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport to make a statement on investment in the railway network in County Clare, in particular the reopening of Crusheen railway station.

I have also received notice from Senator Barry Ward of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage to commence 24-hour UV screening of water from the Poolbeg water treatment facility and regular rapid-result water testing.

Of the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion, I have selected those raised by Senators Murphy, Cassells, Currie, Keogan, O'Loughlin and McGahon and they will be taken now. I regret I had to rule out of order the matter raised by Senator Fitzpatrick on the grounds that the Minister has no official responsibility in the matter. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
