Select Committee on Enterprise and Economic Strategy debate -
Wednesday, 11 Dec 1996

Business of Select Committee.

We will commence the public meeting. Are the minutes of the private session of our previous meeting agreed? Agreed. The next meeting will consider the Supplementary Estimate for the Department of Tourism and Trade at 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday next.

Some weeks ago Deputy Molloy raised the question of the use of Irish and translation. Due to the staff situation at the moment, it will not be possible to make the necessary arrangements in this area; there is no financial provision for it. Deputy Andrews raised the question of Bord Fáilte. It is agreed representatives of that organisation will attend the committee in the New Year, subject to agreement with the convenors.

We will commence Committee Stage of the Organisation of Worktime Bill, which has been referred to the committee by the Dáil on 15 January. The report on the Salmon Management Task Force is also scheduled for 15 January.

There are so many discussions and submissions on that report taking place around the country we should defer discussion until February.

One of the Deputy's colleagues requested a referral until January. We were to take it before Christmas. The suggested dates are 22 or 29 January. Is 29 January agreed? Agreed.

Will the Minister implement parts of that report before it is discussed here? Should we say we would prefer if it was not implemented until we have a full discussion?

We will discuss that and I will convey the Deputy's sentiments to the Minister.

Public session recommenced at 3.15 p.m.
