SELECT COMMITTEE ON ENTERPRISE AND SMALL BUSINESS debate -
Thursday, 4 Dec 1997

Vol. 1 No. 1

Business of Committee.

I congratulate Deputy D'Arcy on his appointment as vice-chairman of the Joint Committee on Enterprise and Small Business. I look forward to working with him in the best interests of those we serve.

I thank the committee and my party for the confidence they have shown in me. I know the Chairman is very active but I will not mind if at any time I am called to carry out functions on his behalf. I hope I will do it to everyone's satisfaction.

We wish Deputy D'Arcy well.

I join in the tributes paid to my colleague Deputy D'Arcy. I have known him for many years. I shared an office with him when I was first elected in 1987. I am aware of his ability, the efforts he makes and the good work he does. I also know that, since we have a very active Chairman, he will not be called on too often.

One never knows. As most Members are aware, we were expecting the Tánaiste today but, due to an accident in which she was involved during the week, she deeply regrets she is unable to attend the meeting. It was suggested by her office that we might reschedule today's meeting but, because of the time constraints regarding the adoption of the Estimates, I indicated that, with her approval, a Minister of State from her Department might attend and that we would endeavour to adopt the Estimates. I believe there will not be any great difference of opinion on what we are discussing today so I did not consider it an issue worth teasing out to any great extent.

I propose we send the Tánaiste our good wishes for a speedy recovery.
