SELECT COMMITTEE ON ENTERPRISE AND SMALL BUSINESS debate -
Tuesday, 18 Jan 2000

Vol. 3 No. 1

Business of Select Committee.

We have received apologies from Deputy Owen, who is attending a Front Bench meeting. I suggest we see how far we get before breaking for lunch. We will then see how we progress through the afternoon. Is it agreed we break for lunch between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and, if necessary, return at 2 p.m? Agreed. It has also been agreed that, given the complexity of the Bill, we will adjourn when we reach section 190, if we get that far today. However, if we do not reach section 190 today, we will adjourn around 6 p.m. and resume on Tuesday, 25 January. We have circulated a list of proposed groupings of amendments for the purpose of debate. Is it agreed we proceed in that fashion? Agreed.

Is Tuesday the preferred debate for those concerned, including the Minister?

I left that matter to the secretariat. However, I understand it is the first available date, in terms of room availability, support staff, etc. As members will recall, I asked at the last meeting for agreement, particularly by the Opposition spokespersons, on a suitable date. I hope that date suits Deputy Rabbitte.

It does not as it happens, but I take my share of the responsibility for agreeing it. However, the work must be done.

I would like to try to accommodate Deputy Rabbitte because he is the only Labour Party member of the committee. I will ask the Clerk to consult with him on——

I am free on that date until 3.30 p.m. but I have a problem after that time, which involves the Minister of State, Deputy Flood, and others.

As I said at the last meeting, I would like to try to accommodate the Deputy. I understand the room is available from early morning so perhaps we could start at 9.30 a.m. or 10 a.m. Is that all right?

Thank you, Chairman.
