Select Committee on Finance and General Affairs debate -
Wednesday, 1 Dec 1993

SECTION 30.

I move amendment No. 39:

In page 21, subsection (2), lines 10 to 13, to delete all words from and including "continue" in line 10 down to and including "county" in line 13 and substitute "apply to each new county".

Will we rehearse the arguments we have had to date?

That is up to you, Deputy.

I have had representations from members of all the new prospective counties that the same provisions on weights and measures should apply throughout the three counties. Without going into a long debate, will the Minister respond?

Again in these circumstances, we will continue the same arrangements for the time being. The three area managers recommended that there would be standardised facilities for the three counties and we should proceed this way as quickly as possible. The matter would be managed as is normal in the counties, and administered and enforced by the gardaí.

Will the Minister give an idea when this might happen? Is it likely to happen in the near or distant future?

I understand the legislation necessary for the establishment of that kind of situation lies with the Department of Enterprise and Employment. Updating the law and transferring responsibility for its operation to Eolas is currently in the course of preparation.

Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.
Section 30 agreed to.
Section 31 agreed to.
