Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation debate -
Thursday, 6 Nov 2014

Business of Select Committee

This meeting has been convened to consider the Workplace Relations Bill 2014, referred to the select committee by an order of the Dáil on 8 October 2014. I welcome the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Richard Bruton, and his officials. Apologies have been received from Deputies Áine Collins and Michael Conaghan. Before we begin I ask members to switch their mobile telephones to safe or flight mode, depending on the device. It is not enough to put them on silent mode as this causes interference and impacts negatively on broadcasting.

A total of 101 amendments have been tabled to the Bill and it is intended we will consider the Bill until we conclude Committee Stage today. Is that agreed? Agreed. If members wish to suspend for 15 minutes at a later stage we can do so. I refer members to the list of amendments grouped for the purposes of debate, which has been circulated.

Before we proceed to consideration of the Bill, do any members wish to raise amendments on Report Stage?

I will list the sections to which I wish to table amendments on Report Stage. These are sections 5, 19, 24, 25, 35, 36, 37, 39, 41(9), 41(10), 41(11), 41(13), 41(14), 42, 44, 49, 77 and 83.

I intend to table amendments between sections 11 and 13, and to sections 24, 31, 32, 36(4), 39 and 68, and to insert a new section after sections 25 and 26. Does the Chairman wish me to refer to the content of the amendments?

I may not table all of these as it will depend on the Minister's response on Committee Stage. I intend to table amendments to sections 5, 19, 24, 35, 37, 41, 44, 49, 77 and 83. I may indicate more during the course of the debate.

That is fine. We will now proceed to consideration of the Bill.

I will introduce two amendments on Report Stage.
