SELECT COMMITTEE ON JUSTICE, EQUALITY, DEFENCE AND WOMEN'S RIGHTS debate -
Tuesday, 20 Nov 2007

Business of Select Committee.

As amendments Nos. 4 and 10 are cognate and amendment No. 11 is related, they may be discussed together.

If the Chairman is prepared to facilitate it, there may be cross-party agreement that once we dispose of this amendment we will retire for a bite to eat for the first time since 8.30 this morning.

I know members are anxious to dispose of this matter this evening in the absence of food or not.

When are we next available?

We have had this discussion. While there is time, a number of other issues would need to move down the order. I am in members' hands if they want to break for a period and resume later.

We have completed approximately half of the Bill as it stands. This is the one remaining substantive issue and there are a few consequential matters. I might be able to help the Chairman. Has the committee scheduled time for the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill?

While we have scheduled time, we still need the amendments.

When is it scheduled to be taken?

On Wednesday 28 November.

Can we not finish this Bill next Wednesday and take the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill later?

I am advised that it would not be possible to take two distinct Bills.

I am not asking for two Bills. When is the committee's next available date to deal with legislation?

On 12 December.

That is fine. We can also take this section on the next day and we should adjourn now. After this section the amendments are very technical in character. This is a point of substance.

I think we would run through it at an earlier stage of the day far more quickly. I am agreeable to do that. I believe the Minister is in the same position as I am. We have been going since early this morning. In terms of rostering, to have the same Minister who we have in committee presenting the Second Stage of a Bill on the floor of the House is not the happiest logistically.

I should say it is not a matter for this committee. How does Deputy Naughten feel about the matter?

I have other priorities in coming weeks. I am easy regarding tonight. I have not been tied up in the House today. I can understand it is different for those who have been tied up in the House all day.

We will adjourn consideration of the Bill until 28 November or 12 December.

I have no objection about facilitating it earlier than 12 December if that is the issue.

What is scheduled for 28 November?

The Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.

Is that our next available date?

I presume then that we can consider this Bill on 28 November.

That is possible. Is that agreed?

We can do the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill on the next available date. I am quite happy that we have made reasonable progress today.

We will do that. We will adjourn until 28 November 2007. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Progress reported; Committee to sit again.
The select committee adjourned at 7.50 p.m. until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 28 November 2007.
