Special Committee Wildlife Bill, 1975 debate -
Wednesday, 20 Oct 1976

SECTION 54.

Question proposed: "That section 54 stand part of the Bill."

This is really a technical provision the effect of which is to ensure that the import and export restrictions stemming from sections 52 and 53 of the Bill in respect of wild animals and wild birds are in addition to—and in no way absolve the importer or exporter from full compliance with—the import and export requirements of the Customs Acts.

Question put and agreed to.

Are there any suggestions as to our next Committee meeting?

I am anxious to get on with the Committee Stage of this as quickly as possible and I suggest that we meet tomorrow.

Might I suggest that we have an agreement to sit on two days next week?

I am aware that the sooner part 4 of this Bill becomes law the better. Due to the dry season, we are in some considerable difficulty in this country in relation to conservation.

We will not accept any device from the Chairman to rush the Bill.

I am just saying that that is the fact and it is the deep concern of the people who are dealing with conservation.

I suggest we meet on one day next week.

Deputy Brennan is more or less prepared to agree to two.

Part 4 will be very controversial.

It is not controversial at all. It looks involved but I will make it very simple. Will we meet on Tuesday?

What time?

4 o'clock?

Four o'clock until half past six.

That is a long sitting.

We sat for 2 hours today. I will say 4.30 p.m. until 6.30 p.m.

I think we should meet at 3.45 p.m. and sit until 6 o'clock.

That is acceptable to me. I earnestly suggest that we meet on 2 days next week, either on Wednesday or Thursday. We will meet on Tuesday from 3.45 p.m. until 6 o'clock and I suggest that we meet also on Wednesday or Thursday.

That is Tuesday 26th, 3.45 p.m. until six o'clock.

The Committee adjourned at 5.05 p.m. until 3.45 p.m. on Tuesday, 26th October, 1976.
