Standing Joint Committee on Consolidation Bills debate -
Thursday, 23 Oct 1997

SECTION 39.

Amendments Nos. 8 and 77 are cognate to amendment No. 6 and they may be discussed together. Is that agreed? Agreed.

I move amendment No. 6:

In page 102, subsection (1), line 24, to delete "Economic".

This amendment tries to remove inconsistencies in existing law and practice by taking account of the change of the name of the EC effected by the 1992 Treaty of Maastricht. It has already changed at European level and it is appropriate the word "Economic" is deleted in the sections it is used.

I accept the amendments put forward by Deputy Ferris. The purpose of the amendments is to achieve adaptation to existing law by taking account of the change to the name of the European Community effected by the Treaty of Maastricht. The amendments are desirable and I recommend the Committee accept them.

Amendment agreed to.
Section 39, as amended, agreed to.
Section 40 to 46, inclusive, agreed to.
