286 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason special needs assistants appointed after 1 September 2003 do not receive the same remuneration as assistants appointed prior to this date, even though there was a huge backlog of applicants with his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. At primary level, special needs assistants employed on a full-time basis receive the same remuneration regardless of the date of appointment. The payment of special needs assistants employed in second level schools is a matter for the managerial authorities of each school.

The matter raised by the Deputy regarding the remuneration of special needs assistants in second level schools appointed after 1 September 2003 is being considered at present. The Deputy will be advised of the position.
