245 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if he will urgently change his proposals on electronic voting and reconsider the old system in order to ensure confidence in the democratic process. [6391/04]
View answerI am committed to delivering the benefits of electronic voting and counting to the entire electorate at the European and local elections. The new system has a proven track record of use in the Netherlands and in a number of areas in Germany. More recently it has also been approved for use in France. It has been tested extensively by a range of independent test institutes and companies and has been successfully used in seven constituencies in Ireland. I am confident that the integrity and security of the democratic process will be enhanced by the system and I look forward to its successful implementation.
