126 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of personnel employed in each Garda division; the number of vacancies for civilians in each Garda division; his plans to sanction the employment of additional personnel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I presume that the Deputy is referring to the number of civil servants employed in each Garda division. The information requested is set out in the attached table. In regard to the number of personnel employed, where there is a vacancy of less than one full post, it is usually the case that such a vacancy arises from a work-sharing arrangement.

In October 2001 the Government approved the Report on Civilianisation in An Garda Síochána which recommended a programme of civilianisation to allow for the release of Garda members to operational policing. In this context, my Department is currently reviewing these figures in conjunction with the Department of Finance and Garda management.

The civilianisation report also provides for the transfer of finance functions from the Garda district clerks to civilians, and the subsequent upgrading of the new civilian role to staff officer. A competition is currently under way to fill these posts.
