414 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if, in view of the report of the expert group on the review of retirement age for retained fire-fighters, retired fire-fighters who are under the age of 58 and in full health will be allowed to avail of this extended optional period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The new arrangements apply only to those fire-fighters who were serving in the retained fire service on 5 November 2002, the date of the agreement with the trade unions to carry out a review of the retirement age. The new arrangements do not, and were not designed to, apply to personnel who retired before that date.
