19 Mr. Deenihan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of prosecutions against retailers who breach price display regulations; the number of officers employed to enforce the regulations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8005/04]
View answerThe European Communities (Requirements to Indicate Product Prices) Regulations 2002, S.I. 639 of 2002, came into force on 1st March 2003. Since then the office of the Director of Consumer Affairs has been proactively enforcing this legislation with excellent co-operation from the retail trade. There were no prosecutions under these regulations last year as prosecution is always the last resort as a means of achieving compliance. There are 20 officers employed in the office of the Director of Consumer Affairs in the general area of enforcement, including enforcement of these regulations.
