Questions (118)

Finian McGrath

Question:

118 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Transport if, as a matter of urgency, he will consider using the new plastic card formatted driving licence as an opportunity to introduce an organ donation scheme, involving the person applying to be presumed an organ donor unless they sign an opt-out form. I refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 438 of 23 March. At present the paper format driving licence contains an optional section where the licence holder may indicate consent to be an organ donor.

I propose to introduce a plastic card licence and tenders are being considered by my Department. Consideration will be given, as part of the development of the card system, to whether optional information on organ donation might be recorded. It is more appropriate for a prospective organ donor to consent to donation as is currently provided for.
