Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

178 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport if he has taken initiatives to ensure that adequate safety and health regulations prevail at all bus stops, including shelters to protect against the elements, and particularly in view of the tragedy at a Dublin bus stop earlier in 2004; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The provision of bus stops and bus shelters is an operational matter for the companies concerned. The location of bus stops is a matter for the Garda Commissioner under section 85 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 in consultation with both the local authority and the bus service provider. I have recently asked both Bus Átha Cliath and Bus Éireann to undertake a review of all bus stops from a safety perspective.
