Questions (194)

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

183 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that travellers in the 16 to 18 year old age group who are not in full time education, training or employment are not eligible for medical cards and that a disproportional higher number of travellers are in this category compared to their peers in the settled community; and if he will make changes in order to assist young travellers. Responsibility for the provision of a medical card is, by legislation, a matter for the chief executive officer of the relevant health board/authority. No particular groups in society, other than persons aged 70 years and over, are automatically entitled to a medical card. Each case is assessed on its individual merits.
