85 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will indicate his feelings on the implications of the findings of the 9-11 Commission which suggest that there was no credible connection between the attack on the Twin Towers on 11 September 2001 and the previous Iraqi Administration, in view of the fact that it is the case that the Taoiseach relied on this alleged connection in order to justify the use of Shannon airport by the US military. View answerThe Government has never taken the position that there was a connection between the attacks on the Twin Towers and the previous Iraqi administration. The Government, therefore, did not rely on this alleged connection in order to justify the use of Shannon airport by the US military.
The provision of facilities at Shannon airport to the US military is a long-standing policy which has been in place for several decades. Within the span of the period, several conflicts have occurred in which the US was involved.
The findings of the 9-11 Commission are a matter for the US Government.
