106 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to concerns expressed that widespread damage may have been done to the voices of primary teachers as a result of teaching duties that may leave the State exposed to claims for damages; if information is available to his Department on the extent of this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. There is little information available to indicate how prevalent voice problems may be among the general teaching profession in Ireland. The issue has not been highlighted previously by any of the interests concerned. There have been reports recently in the media concerning a new study of voice problems among teachers in the Dublin area, carried out by Professor R. Kinsella with Ms Catherine Munier of the Smurfit School of Business, which I understand has yet to be published. The findings of the study will be considered when it becomes available.
