View answerSignificant numbers of additional teaching posts have been created at primary level in recent years. The recruitment and appointment of teachers to fill vacancies in an individual school is a matter for the board of management of the school concerned. Boards of management must make every effort, including advertising in a national newspaper, to obtain the services of a qualified teacher for appointment to a temporary or permanent post.
I understand that there was a total of 50 primary teaching vacancies in Mayo in September 2004 as a consequence of the application of the mainstream staffing schedule, the Giving Children an Even Break scheme, retirements, secondments, career breaks and job-sharing arrangements.
