A framework for the establishment of a digital terrestrial television, DTT, network was provided for under the Broadcasting Act 2001. The Act envisaged the roll out of DTT with private sector involvement. A public tender competition, however, did not result in the award of a licence.

My Department has continued to explore, with RTÉ, how Ireland can best plan for the digital future. I am reviewing options for the development of DTT, including the possibility of a DTT demonstration project.
