As I stated in response to Question No. 361 of 12 October 2004, the issue of public safety zones at State airports was the subject of a study by consultants which was submitted to the Departments of Transport and the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in September 2003. The recommendations in the report are being considered by the Departments with a view to submitting proposals to the Government. If they are approved by the Government, it is envisaged that public safety zones will be implemented through local development plans. The implementation of the zones, whether by variation of a current development plan or inclusion in a draft plan, would be the responsibility of the relevant local authority.
