Questions (223)

John McGuinness

Question:

220 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if she will examine the case being made by a school (details supplied) in County Kilkenny for improved funding under the stay in school retention initiative in view of the scope of the scheme it operates and the fact that north Kilkenny is the highest unemployment black spot in Kilkenny; the reasons the school was approved only 50% of the full grant in 2003; and if she will make a statement on the matter. My Department is finalising a review of educational disadvantage schemes with a view to building on what has been achieved to date, adopting a more systematic, targeted and integrated approach and strengthening the capacity of the system to meet the educational needs of disadvantaged children and young people. The future position on this scheme will be clarified in the context of this review.
