View answerThe Department of Education and Science, in conjunction with Bus Éireann, initiated a School Bus Flashing Lights pilot scheme in Ennis in January 2005 and I understand that it was proposed to then extend the pilot initiative to other areas to test out various options for the activation of flashing light units while a school transport vehicle stopped on a public road to pick up or set down school children. Consideration of the creation of a road traffic requirement of the nature suggested by the Deputy will be informed by the outcome and evaluation of these pilot measures.
