228 Deputy Richard Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if patients who are undergoing courses of chemotherapy treatment are obliged to pay the daily public ward charge on each occasion that they visit, which appears to be the practice in some hospitals; and if she will make a statement on the matter. View answerThe Health (In-Patient Charges) (Amendment) Regulations, 2008, impose a charge of €75 per night up to a maximum of €750 in any 12 consecutive months, during which an individual is maintained as an in-patient in a public hospital or is admitted to the hospital as a day case. This charge applies to everyone receiving treatment in a public hospital with the exception of, inter alia, persons with full eligibility, women receiving services in respect of motherhood, children up to the age of six weeks and children suffering from prescribed long term diseases.
