161 Deputy Derek Keating asked the Minister for Education and Skills the number of teachers retired or otherwise engaged who were employed by his Department to act as supervisors during the exam period for the leaving certificate this year; the status of a person who acts as a supervisor; if it required that they be be registered, approved by the Teaching Council and cleared by the Garda; the employment status of engaging them for this work, that is, if a person is out sick or if a person was employed as a teacher in another school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The State Examinations Commission has statutory responsibility for operational matters relating to the certificate examinations including determining procedures in places where examinations are conducted including the supervision of examinations.
