650 Deputy Niall Collins asked the Minister for Defence the number of sick days taken by staff in his Department in 2009, 2010 and 2011; the average number of sick days per staff in total across his Department and broken down by Department section in 2009, 2010 and 2011; and the median number of sick days per staff in total across his Department and broken down by Department section in 2009, 2010 and 2011 in tabular form. My Department adopts a policy of proactive management of sick leave through a range of strategies designed to reduce absence from work. Sick leave rates are closely monitored and analysed, and in recent years the number of days lost to sick leave has been reducing. Sick leave rates for the Department have fallen to a current rate of 3.2%. The sick leave data requested is set out in the following table:
