My Department has no record of an application from the Group referred to by the Deputy. An official from my Department contacted a spokesperson for the Group who confirmed that an application had not been submitted yet.

This Group is at a preliminary stage of gathering support for their application, which as I understand from the details supplied with this question, was the purpose of their communication with the Deputy. They intend to submit an application for funding to my Department shortly.

Under a new procedure, a medical card will remain valid, irrespective of the expiry date shown on the card, once the medical card holder is genuinely engaging with the HSE review process. The medical card status of an individual can be confirmed by any doctor or pharmacist in their practice or pharmacy, or by the medical card holders themselves either on-line at www.medicalcard.ie or through their GP's practice system.

Departmental Funding

Questions (231)

John Lyons

Question:

231. Deputy John Lyons asked the Minister for Health if he will protect funding in 2013 for not for profit organisations on which many persons with neurological conditions are dependent for support, specialist rehabilitation and respite; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45474/12]

The Government's priority is to reform how health services are delivered, in order to ensure a more productive and cost effective health system. The level of funding available for the health budget and the extent of the savings required in the health sector is being considered as part of the Estimates and budgetary process for 2013 which is currently underway. Deliberations by the Government on the expenditure allocations for next year are likely to continue up until Budget time and it would not be appropriate for me to comment further at this stage pending the outcome of those deliberations. The very difficult financial position facing the Exchequer will obviously require very careful management across all areas of expenditure.

Source: Hospital Inpatient Enquiry (HIPE)

Notes:

Data refer to discharges from publicly funded acute hospitals, and are based on HIPE data received to End of July 2012.

The 2011 HIPE file is considered to be sufficiently complete for reporting purposes. The coverage is estimated to be in excess of 98%. However this varies among hospitals. In particular note that the coverage for Cork University Hospital is approximately 97%; the coverage for Roscommon County Hospital is less than 2%, and Bantry General Hospital did not report any HIPE data in 2011.

For reasons of confidentiality, cells with between 1 and 4 cases are displayed as <5
