82. Deputy Dara Calleary asked the Minister for Education and Skills if he will provide details of all the Gaeltacht allowance payable to civil and public servants; the level of each allowance payable to each category and the monetary level of each allowance together with the total amount payable in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Information on Gaeltacht allowances payable to teachers in primary and post primary schools for 2009 - 2011 is set out in the attached table. Details of grants paid to teachers employed by Vocational Education Committees are held by the individual VECs. A standard Gaeltacht allowance was introduced in 1968 following the recommendations of the Ryan Tribunal. A Gaeltacht allowance has been in place since the 1920s. The Gaeltacht allowance was initially introduced to attract qualified teachers to schools in Gaeltacht areas. The allowance is payable to teachers in schools situated in the Gaeltacht in which all instruction is given through the medium of Irish. Following the recent Government decision on allowances, this allowance has been abolished for new beneficiaries. GAELTACHT ALLOWANCE PAID TO PRIMARY TEACHERS FOR THE PERIOD 2009 - 2011
