428. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources his plans to ensure the continuity of telecommunication services in view of Eircom's announcement that it will reduce its workforce by 2,000 employees. [51413/12]
View answerWhile clearly any announcements of job losses are a cause of concern, I must point out I have no statutory function in relation to this matter. Eircom is a private company operating in a liberalised market. As the Deputy will appreciate, any proposals by the company, including this decision to reduce its workforce, is a day to day operational matter for the company. Eircom has confirmed that detailed discussions with staff and their trade union representatives on the programme of cost saving measures are taking place.
