776. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Justice and Equality his plans to offer members of An Garda Síochána a career break from the force in order to save money; the number of persons that will be offered a career break; the cost per person and the impact be on public safety and law and order with such a reduction in the force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Career breaks are currently available to members of the Garda Síochána, and discussions are underway with the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform on how this scheme could be enhanced so as to provide greater opportunities to members of the Force. The details of any such scheme will be settled in these discussions which are expected to conclude shortly.
