On 7th May this year members of the Government, namely An Taoiseach, the Minister for Finance and myself, met with representatives of the Irish Tobacco Manufacturing Advisory Committee at the Department of the Taoiseach. I was accompanied at the meeting by an advisor and an official from my Department. The focus of the meeting was on the illicit trade in tobacco products in Ireland and, in particular, measures taken to curb such criminal activity.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

180. Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Justice and Equality further to Parliamentary Question No. 533 of 21 May 2013, if he will detail in tabular form all countries involved and the number of children involved in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26055/13]

The statistics requested by the Deputy are detailed in the table. The statistics requested relate only to the number of children, not applications, whose parents were subject to a Court Order to return their children plus those who agreed to voluntarily return the children. It should be noted that some applications are withdrawn and others are resolved by different arrangements including access. Since these statistics are not normally published, in order to mitigate against the possibility of individual identities being associated where single cases are involved, in such instances, these have been aggregated into an “other countries” category.

Written answers

The Deputy will be aware that, under the provisions of the Courts Service Act 1998, management of the courts is the responsibility of the Courts Service and I have no role in the matter. Section 4(3) of the 1998 Act provides that the Courts Service is independent in the performance of its functions, which includes the provision of statistics. However, in order to be of assistance, I have had enquiries made with the Courts Service and the information requested by the Deputy is set out in the table.

The Garda Síochána Act 2005 makes provision for the compilation and publication of crime statistics by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), as the national statistical agency, and the CSO has established a dedicated unit for this purpose. I have asked the CSO to provide statistics directly to the Deputy. Statistics for years prior to 2003 are available in the relevant Annual Reports of An Garda Síochána, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas library.
