203. Deputy Peadar Tóibín asked the Minister for Defence the proportion of the total number employed in the armed forces as a percentage of the overall public sector for the five consecutive years for which the most recent data is available. [29741/13]

The proportion of the total number employed in the Permanent Defence Force (PDF) as a percentage of the overall public sector as at 31 December in each of the last five years is contained in the table below.

It should be noted that the figures for the public sector, excluding the PDF, do not include personnel who were on an unpaid leave of absence exceeding eight weeks. The figures for the PDF include such personnel.
