The use of a mechanically propelled vehicle without motor insurance is an offence under Section 56 of the Road Traffic  Act, 1961, as amended. The maximum fine on summary conviction is €5,000, with the actual amount being at discretion of the judge hearing the case. In addition to the fine, where the judge intends applying a consequential disqualification following conviction, penalty points are not applied. The minimum disqualification is for a period of 1 year. Otherwise, 5 penalty points will be endorsed on the person's licence record following conviction.
