Questions (148)

Jonathan O'Brien

148. Deputy Jonathan O'Brien asked the Minister for Education and Skills if he will reverse the decision of Student Universal Support Ireland which has refused to pay the contribution fee in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Cork who was enrolled in a social work degree in USI, having previously moved back to his parents' house due to ill-health; if he feels that it is sufficient that grown adults are refused education funding based on their parents' incomes when they are not guaranteed that their parents will fund a course; the options open to students in those circumstances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Written answers (Question to Education)

Officials in my Department have confirmed that the student referred to by the Deputy has appealed the decision of the awarding authority to the independent Student Grants Appeals Board. The appeal was received by the Board on 31st October 2013 and will be heard within the timeframe set out in the Student Support Act 2011. The student will be notified directly of the outcome of the appeal.
