183. Deputy Michael Ring asked the Minister for Education and Skills when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will receive a reply regarding school transport in respect of their child who has visual impairment problems; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6171/14]
View answerUnder the terms of my Department's Primary School Transport Scheme, children are eligible for transport where they reside not less than 3.2 kms from and are attending their nearest national school as determined by the Department/Bus Éireann, having regard to ethos and language. Bus Éireann, which operates the school transport scheme on behalf of my Department, has advised that the children in question are not attending their nearest national school and are therefore not eligible for school transport. The family should liaise with the Special Education Needs Organiser (SENO) should they wish to apply for school transport under the terms of my Department's School Transport Scheme for Children with Special Educational Needs. Under the terms of this scheme children are eligible for school transport to the nearest school that is resourced to meet their educational needs. The terms of this scheme are applied equitably on a national basis.
