282. Deputy Colm Keaveney asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will release funding, through the National Roads Authority or otherwise, to Galway County Council to put in place a footpath leading to St. Michael’s Cemetery on Tynagh Road, Portumna and to widen the road for parking and to allow emergency vehicles get through while funerals are taking place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads (including footpaths) in its area, is a statutory function of each road authority in accordance with the provisions of section 13 of the Roads Act, 1993.  Works on such roads are a matter for the relevant local authority to be funded from its own resources supplemented by State road grants.  The initial selection and prioritisation of works to be funded is also a matter for the local authority.

On 23 January this year, I announced the €331.9m investment programme in 2014 for regional and local roads. From this allocation Galway County Council has been allocated over €18.3 million.
