The default speed limits for different categories of road, including roads in built up urban areas, are specified in the Road Traffic Acts. There is provision in the legislation for local authorities to make bye-laws providing for special speed limits in specific circumstances. The enforcement of speed limits is a matter for An Garda Síochána. Road authorities also have powers to provide traffic calming measures on roads in their charge.
