I propose to take Questions Nos. 64 to 86, inclusive, together.

Data on staffing numbers in higher education institutions is collated by the Higher Education Authority at the end of each quarter. The most recent data available is therefore in respect of the last quarter (December) in 2013. Staff numbers are reported in two categories: academic and non-academic.

The following data pertains in respect of UCC, TCD, UCG and the University of Limerick (UL) at the end of Q4 2013:

UCC : 954 Non Academic and 681 Academic staff.TCD : 1020 Non Academic and 649 Academic staff.UCG: 757 Non Academic and 715 Academic staff.UL: 465 Non Academic and 503 Academic staff.

It should be noted that non-academic staff includes a range of categories of support staff in an institution, including administrative staff. Non-academic staff are involved in student focused functions such as student admissions and registration, campus service centres, assessment and library as well as the more traditional back office functions such as ICT support, finance and payroll. The non-academic category of staff may also include support staff involved in activities related to research such as administrative support and laboratory technicians. The following table outlines the numbers of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer grade staff in these 4 institutions. Data relating to the contact hours that lecturers have with students is still being collated by the Higher Education Authority and I will arrange that this information be forwarded to the deputy as soon as its to hand.
