339. Deputy Pearse Doherty asked the Minister for Social Protection the number of persons in receipt of rent supplement in Dublin; the number of persons in the rental accommodation scheme in Dublin; and the cost of the respective schemes for Dublin. [17558/14]
View answerThe purpose of rent supplement is to provide short-term support to eligible people living in private rented accommodation, whose means are insufficient to meet their accommodation costs and who do not have accommodation available to them from any other source. The Government has provided over €344 million for the scheme in 2014, expenditure on a county basis is not available. There are currently approximately 78,000 rent supplement recipients of which some 29,000 are in the Dublin area. Recipient numbers and expenditure in relation to the rental accommodation scheme is a matter for the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.
